Our beachfront cottage is a three bedroom, two bath house, located in the country at Malaekahana Bay near Oahu's North Shore. We are approximately one hour from Honolulu and just a few minutes from the Polynesian Cultural Center.
Along the full length of the crescent shaped Malaekahana Bay is a magnificant beach--wide, sandy and long. The swimming is great as is body boarding and surfing. SUNSET MAGAZINE calls Malaekahana one of the best beaches on Oahu. The 44 homes (including ours) on large lots, some as much as an acre, along Malaekahana Bay very early became the summer retreat of the well-to-do families of Honolulu. The beach is never crowded. During a weekday you may very well have the whole 3-mile long beach to yourself (except for a few fishermen), whilst on Sundays there may be a dozen families or so on the beach. At one end of the crescent is Malaekahana State Park with its little Goat Island a couple of hundred yards off shore. (The island can be reached by walking over the coral when the tide is low. Wear something on your feet.) It is a sanctuary for noddy terns who nest in holes in the ground and the island has a lovely white beach with clear, calm, blue-green water. At the other end of the beach is a coral shelf and a stream in which small children love to play and explore. Children of all ages also love the crab-hunting at night.
Since our house is on the beach, there is a wonderful view of the ocean and Goat Island. There are living, dining and kitchen areas with picture windows and sliding glass doors to the deck outside. There is a covered deck where we keep a barbecue for you to use. The master bedroom has a queen size bed, a walk-in closet and its own bathroom with shower. The other two bedrooms each have 2 twin beds and another bathroom (with shower) between them. The house is completely furnished with linens, towels, microwave, dishes, cable TV. There is a clothes washer but no dryer (the breezes help dry laundry faster than any dryer could do). The floors throughout the house are ceramic tiles, resistant to sandy wet feet.
The house is very pleasant, quiet and comfortable but IT IS NOT A LUXURY CONDO. It is furnished simply but comfortably to make it the kind of place you can pop in and out of all day with sandy feet and wet bathing suits with no worry. It is very fun for children as well. There is a back yard for sunning, horseshoes, picnicking etc. The house is set well back from the main road, separated from it by trees and an access road.
We are only a few minutes from the Polynesian Cultural Center. Two small shopping centers are within ten minutes drive. Kahuku Sugar Mill is a few minutes away with shops, wonderful summer produce, a prawn farm and a municipal golf course. Five more minutes take you to the Turtle Bay Hilton Hotel with its lovely large golf course, tennis courts, horseback riding and fine dining. Another few minutes and you are at famous Sunset Beach and Waimea Bay.
Our non-holiday rates are $1000/week, $525/weekend, or $175 per day with a 3 day minimum, for up to 6 adults, tax included. The weekly rate for July, August and the Holidays is $1200/week, or $185 per day, tax included. To hold your reservation we need a $200/week cleaning and breakage deposit which is nonrefundable if you cancel your reservation. The full rental amount is due 30 days in advance of your arrival. After your departure we will refund the deposit less long distance telephone charges, if any, and a $100 cleaning fee.
